The History of the Faculty
The Faculty of Civil Engineering is an Academic Unit of the University of Prishtina. The Faculty of Civil Engineering inherits its history counted in the seventh decade and is known as the initial institution of technical sciences in our country.
The foundation of the studies in the field of technical sciences, namely Civil Engineering, were laid with the opening of the Higher Technical School of Prishtina, on October 20, 1961 with teaching in three technical directions of Construction, Electrical Engineering and Machinery. After four successful years of work of this school, the procedures for the opening of the Technical Faculty of Prishtina began, considering it as a requirement of the time, as there was a great need for schooling of staff of different technical profiles for the country.
November 9, 1965 is known as the opening day of the Technical Faculty, with the Department of Civil Engineering, whereas the lectures began on December 10, 1965 with a total of 138 students, with academic staff of five lecturers and five assistants and took place in two classrooms with 40 seats each and an amphitheater with 202 seats.
The Elders of the Technical Faculty on October 30, 1967 decided to open two more sections; Machinery and Electrical Engineering. For the opening of the Architecture section the academic staff of the Technical Faculty made a decision on May 12, 1977 while the lectures were organized in the academic year 1978/79.
In 1979, the Technical Faculty consisted of three Basic Joint Labor Organizations (BJLO) with the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, the Faculty of Machinery and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. From 1988 to 1998, the Technical Faculty, like many other institutions in the country, faced major clashes with the Serbian hegemonic power, dismissing academic staff, occupying teaching facilities, forcing self-organization of teaching in makeshift facilities in the residential buildings of citizens until the liberation of the country in 1999.
After 1999, the Technical Faculty was divided into three main academic units formed as the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Electronic and Computer Engineering.
In 2019, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture are formed with a function independent of each other.
The beginnings of the work of the Faculty are characterized by the difficulties of finding the academic staff and especially the one in Albanian language. The 70s are known as the years of creating the necessary staff for the teaching processes of educational institutions in the country. Teaching was conducted mainly in Croatian-Serbian, while exercises in some subjects were conducted in Albanian. In the beginning of the work of the Faculty, the lack of academic staff was compensated by the academic staff of the Faculties coming from Sarajevo, Belgrade, Nis and Skopje. In the years 71-73, the Albanian staff graduated from the Universities of the former Yugoslavia, in agreement with the Universities from Albania, managed to create staff prepared for the needs of the scientific and academic teaching.
In the beginning of the work of the institution, the infrastructure of the facilities was with small capacities and inherited from the military barracks which were adapted for the needs of teaching. Over time, additional facilities were built as well as superstructures of existing facilities in order to increase the capacity of students and the institution. The progress of the Technical Faculty is considered the construction of the new facility and the beginning of work on this facility in 1982, at the current location while the Architecture remains in the facilities of the Technical Faculty in the city center where it is located today.
The Faculty of Civil Engineering, starting from the years of its inception, is considered as a leader in our country for the education and upbringing of the generations who served and serve the needs of the country. The creation of new cadres with scientific and academic titles creates a constant stability for unhindered functioning. There are many generations of Civil Engineers who found themselves in construction projects and facilities not only in our country but also around the world, in the US, Canada, Europe and other countries.
The Faculty Study programs were reformed and are being reformed following the development trends of science and technology at the global level, the demands of the local and European market. From 2002 the study programs are organized according to the declaration of Bologna and the Faculty organizes and develops the study programs of the cycle of basic Bachelor and Master studies.
Today, the Faculty of Civil Engineering organizes and develops study programs in BSc and MSc Construction, BSc and MSc Hydrotechnics, BSc and MSc Geodesy and BSc Environmental Engineering, with a number of students of about 4000. All are accredited and contemporary study programs.
The Departments: Construction, Hydrotechnics, Geodesy and Environmental Engineering are an integral part of the Faculty. They are the Laboratories of construction materials, asphalt, Geomechanics, Hydrotechnics, Geodesy and Environmental Engineering as a part of the Institute of the Faculty.
